Lisa Petty, Pastor

Here’s the short answers some of the questions people are curious about:

Yes, I’m a woman and I’m a pastor.

The United Methodist Church ordains men and women and has been doing so since 1968 when the United Methodist Church was formed from the Methodist Church and Evangelical United Brethren. John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist movement, licensed women to preach as early at 1761! The scriptural references to women being silent (mostly in Timothy) are believed to be penned not by the Apostle Paul, but one posing as Paul and dates 20-30 years after all of the other original authentic Pauline letters.

I grew up the daughter, granddaughter, and great-granddaughter of United Methodist (and Methodist Episcopal) ministers.

I have ink – a mostly full left sleeve and then some.

I have known God and Jesus Christ to be a part of my life for as long as I can remember, though my first call to ministry came at the age of 17 during a high school summer camp in Julian, California. At the age of 19 I got my first tattoo and several since. Each one has a personal meaning and a theological meaning. The butterfly symbolizes new life and new possibilities which I believe are in each of us as a gift from God every day.  The Hebrew writing on my left arm is the Shema – Deuteronomy 6:4-5, and the grape vine is a symbol of the cup of the new covenant – the covenant that Jesus made with the world, breaking the old laws of the Hebrew Bible, and saying that more important than anything else, was love for God and love for neighbor. I believe this to be the primary teaching of Christ and try to live it out daily.

I have several degrees – including a Master of Divinity.

Within the United Methodist denomination, to be ordained in full connection with the church, pastors have to complete a Masters degree. (Some denominations do not require pastors to have any form of formal training or degree, but the UMC does.)

After finishing high school I attended the University of Redlands, several community colleges and finally California State University, Fullerton, where I obtained my Bachelor of Arts in Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations.  During the 10 years it took me to complete my undergraduate education, I worked in several United Methodist Churches in southern California.  My work within the church was in several different areas, including youth ministries, children’s ministries, young adult ministries, and leadership development, and long range planning.  After completing my undergraduate degree, I moved to Colorado and began work on my MDiv. at the Iliff School of Theology in Denver.  I graduated with a Master of Divinity in 2009. The doctoral degree may come at a later date, because I am a student through and through – but today, a Masters is enough.

I’m brand new….

Not only is God continually making me new, but I am literally new to Montrose! As of July 1, 2017, the Bishop and her cabinet of District Superintendents have appointed me here to Montrose UMC.

I’m married with children…

I have a most amazing husband, JC…(yes I’m a pastor married to JC). We have some fantastic children, that are biologically his, but I claim and call my own: Elly is beginning her 3rd year in college in Central Florida; Wesley is a Freshman at Montrose High School, and Kalib is a 6th grader! While this is a big transition for the family, we are all being patient and learning great things about our new community!

I am passionate about missions, outreach, new and innovative ways of doing worship, and ministry in general, as well as preaching.  I am open to new ideas and love meeting new people. I am laid back, easy-going and easy to talk to (or at least people tell me that). I hope to see you in worship or for a meeting of coffee or wine – just call to set up a time. So far this is community of faith has welcomed us with open arms and loving hearts and we can’t wait to see where the Lord is leading us! See you in Worship!

Blessings,

Pastor Lisa
